2/4GB- 4/10GB Tape Drive

Archive was the originator of the Python, later Peregrine, tape drives. Connor bought Archive around 1993. Seagate bought Connor about 1996. You will find utilities and information on Seagate, Internet Archive about 2000 is good.

4MMDAT4 and 4MMDAT5 support the Microcode update process for the IBM internal 3.5" & 5.25" 4mm 4/10GB SCSI tape Drives. The product codes of the tape drives are 74G8632 (3.5" drive) and 76G8631 (5.25" drive). This utility uses the SCSI host adapter card used to connect the tape drives to the PC to update the microcode of the tape drive for non-RAID systems.

Description  4 mm Tape Drive attaches to any system using a SE SCSI-II Standard ANSI X3.131-199X Rev. 10h.
Data Transfer Rate: 400 to 1600KBps (183Kbs for 2GB)  1000KBps is typical with Data Compression (732Kbs for 2GB). Data compression hardware, contained in the tape drive, is controlled by the system software .
Status light: Indicates when it is time to clean the tape path.
Internal diagnostics:  Activated when 4-mm Diagnostic Cartridge is loaded into drive. System intervention not required to run these internal diagnostics.
Media Recognition System: Only 'data grade' media can be used with this tape drive.

DDS3 Tape unable to be read after use with IBM 4/10GB 4mm DAT SCSI tape drive

The IBM 4/10GB 4mm DAT SCSI Tape Drives (Option p/n 74G8631 for the 5.25" form factor drive, and Option p/n 74G8632 for the 3.5" form factor drive) should not be used with a DDS3 tape cartridge. If a DDS3 tape is used with the 4/10GB 4mm DAT drives, the drives will not be able to read the information from a DDS3 cartridge once the cartridge has been ejected from the 4/10GB 4mm tape drive.
