If the respective modem is
connected to a ring station or a file server, it is not actually considered
a network peripheral because it does not contain its own NIC. In this case,
the procedures beginning on this page are applicable. If the modem does
contain its own NIC, you should troubleshoot the problem as a network peripheral
by going to page 10. If after troubleshooting
the problem as a network peripheral you feel that the modem or modem-sharing
software is at fault, come back to this page.
This procedure is generic
as to the modem and modem network-sharing software manufacturer. For some
of the troubleshooting steps on this page, you should also reference the
manufacturer's documentation for any special
11.1 You
have a problem accessing or using a modem connected to the ring as a shared
modem.
Check the ring station or file server to which the modem is connected
and the modem itself to make sure that they are configured with all the
proper hardware and software components and the correct configuration parameters.
Also check the network file server for all the correct modem-sharing software
and proper configuration.
Are any incorrect configuration parameters present in either the
respective ring station, modem, or network file server?
Take the necessary action to resolve
the problem, and retest the modem for proper operation. If the failure
symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service
log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .
Attempt to run any available modem
diagnostics and troubleshoot the modem link cables and phone lines.
Did running the diagnostics, checking the link, or checking the phone
lines produce any errors?
Take the necessary action to resolve
the problem and retest the modem for proper operation. If the failure symptom
is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log.
If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .
A configuration problem may still
exist with the modem or the modem network-sharing software. Reference the
respective modem and modem-software manufacturers' instructions.

have a problem accessing or using a modem connected to a ring from a remote
location.
Check the local and host ring stations to which the modems are connected
and the modems themselves to make sure that they are configured with all
the proper hardware and software components and the correct configuration
