IBM Personal System/2 Model 57 SX ![]() General information Machine type: 8557 Announce date: June, 1991 Excerpt from the original announcement letter; " The IBM Personal System/2(R) Model 57 SX is a Micro Channel(R) system designed to complement and enhance the PS/2(R) Model 55 SX, Model 65 SX and the low end of the Model 70 386 family. It provides product improvements such as increased processor speed, configuration flexibility, 16-bit video graphics array (VGA) graphics and a small computer system interface (SCSI) input/output (I/O) interface. PS/2 Model 57 SX provides a 20-MHz 80386SX microprocessor. Two models are offered with SCSI fixed disk capacities of 80MB (Million Bytes) (8557-045) and 160MB (Million Bytes) (8557-049). PS/2 Model 57 SX features a 5-slot and 4-bay mechanical package. It is designed for desktop operation but ships with a vertical stand, allowing the customer the flexibility of horizontal or vertical orientation. The mechanical package allows for expansion with five 16-bit slots for Micro Channel adapters and four bays for I/O devices. Two of the bays contain a 3.5-inch 2.88MB media sense diskette drive and a SCSI fixed disk. Additional 5.25-inch and/or 3.5-inch devices, diskette drives, fixed disks, tape and CD-ROM drives, and similar devices may be installed in the two remaining bays. The SCSI controller is integrated in the planar so a slot is not required. Up to seven SCSI devices (including the standard SCSI fixed disk) may be attached to the system. Two additional SCSI devices may be attached internally and the remaining devices externally via the external SCSI connector.
